Carmina Burana is not an opera, rather a cantata. It can be staged with some opera-like aspects, such as dance, visual design, etc. it is typically not performed that way.
It's a set of poems put to music...there is no libretto.

Carmina Burana by Orff is a powerful opera.
Phantom of the Opera, great love story, with a sad under lying story line. There was a movie made of this and it was so beautifully done, male or female you'll love it.
Magic Flute is one of my favorites, and it isn't too long. The story is also very intriguing, simple to follow, and the music is wonderful! As for The Marriage of Figaro it is so damn confusing your paper will go on forever! Stick to something simple.
i saw a bit of hsm pinafore on the performance channel and it looked really good. not a tradional opera but it is classed as light opera. production standards looked amazing.
