singing is a function built into the body, just as running is. Not everyone who jogs around the block has the wherewithall to become an Olympic runner.

Not everyone who enjoys singing has what it takes to get to the Olympic size-games of singing, either.

It takes at least 4-6 years of training in a university or conservatory setting, and then, you've only just started on a life-long search for continuous work. the business is as hard as the pop music biz. Contracts are of short duration, and if you're ok with selling shoes in between gigs, then you'll have no problems. Most of us don't really care to go backwards like that, but sometimes it becomes a necessity, especiially if you indulge in having a family and kids as well.

Only the very very few make it to the winner's podium, get recording contracts and year-round work.

Well anyone can learn to sing opera, but a person has to have natural talent to excell...
lynndramsop is right. Besides, there is much more to opera than just singing. There may be a lot of physical demands, perhaps even dancing, plus some acting would be helpful.
No, you have to have talent and not everyone has the type of voice for opera, you have to study and then a teacher will tell you if you have what it takes to be an opera singer !!!!! Some people this comes naturally and others have a voice that can be trained, Mario Lanza was a perfect example of a natural voice.
