I don't think opera singers are any fatter than the rest of the population. The stereotype of the fat lady wearing a helmet with horns is just a joke. Certainly some of them are fat. But I've attended professional opera in Chicago for years and I haven't seen any more overweight people on that stage than I see any place else.
They are probably pigs when it comes to food.
Because they make a lot of money! Opera singers in fact don't need to be fat... Anne Evans, notable for her numerous castings as Brunnhilde in Wagner's Ring series, is actually svelte... and Brunnhilde, like many of Wagner's leading roles, requires a tremendously powerful and flexible voice. I mean, it's Wagner...
Not all opera singers are fat. Look at Emmy Rossum! (and even Sarah Brightman) But, IMHO, I think some are because they are more concerned with how they sound than how they look.
There actually is a good explaination for this, and I'm being serious.

Opera singers sing all day, and there for they can't really eat most of the day because it clogs their voices, and sing they do most their singing and rehearsing in the afternoons and evenings, they often get in the habit of barely eating during the day (only drinking water) and eating everything at night after rehearsal or the concert. This type of diet is considered the worst because they don't burn any of the calories off till the next day. And that's why it's hard for them to stay thin.
enlarged diaframs, they have to look "full" not like little twigs on stage....
