What is the best opera playing at the MET in NYC?

That's very much a matter of personal taste! Puccini ("Manon Lescaut") is probably a good choice for newbies, but "Tristan und Isolde" by Wagner is on of my very favorite operas of all time--a powerful, 4-hour meditation on what romantic love is. It can be overwhelming.

I'm really excited about the new production of Peter Grimes and the upcoming Tristan, but Manon Lescaut is also supposed to be quite good.

You can listen to some of these through the Met radio broadcasts and make up your mind if you want to see them live. It depends what city you live in, but the broadcasts are usually Saturday afternoons.
